Roy E. Manker, 85, departed this life May 20, 2004, in Sebring, Fla.

He was born July 26, 1918, the son of the Revs. Bernard and Lila Manker, who served as pastor of the Ellsworth, Phelps and East Jordan Pilgrim/Wesleyan churches during the late '20s.

A graduate of Flint Central High School in 1935 and Central Michigan University with an MA in 1940 and an MA in math from the University of Michigan, he taught math at the U of M (Flint) until retirement.

He spent his summers on beautiful Grand Traverse Bay at Atwood enjoying sailing and gatherings with the "Beach Gang," and living in a log home he had personally built. He loved playing his violin in the Sebring Orchestra, playing the organ and singing in the "Manker Quartet" at family gatherings.

Following the news of Dec. 7, 1941, of the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Naval Air Corps, where he became a Naval officer and flew torpedo bombers off aircraft carriers, receiving the distinction of becoming executive officer of the squadron. He continued his enjoyment of flying throughout his life in his private plane.

He leaves his wife, Lucille, of Sebring, Fla.; two daughters, Sharon Manker of Fountain Valley, Calif., and Jill Stipes of Fenton, Mich.; two brothers, Charles of Petoskey and Bernard Jr. of Crawfordsville, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Doris, his wife, Otha, his sister, Mae, and brother, Wesley.

A memorial service is planned with the Rev. Charles Manker officiating at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, at the Manker cottage, Antrim Lane, Ellsworth.
