Long-time local doctor dies at 87

    Dr. Verne R. Heimann, 87, of Sioux City died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000 at a Sioux City retirement center.
    Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Don Cameron officiating. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date in Albia, Iowa. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.
    Dr. Heimann was born Dec. 14, 1912, in Albia, the son of Joseph A. and Mary J. (McInnes) Heimann. He graduated from Albia High School in 1931. He attended Albia Junior College before attending the University of Iowa, where he received his bachelor of science degree in 1935 and his medical degree in 1939.
    He then became an intern at De Paul Hospital in St. Louis. He pursued his post graduate work at Washington University in St. Louis and at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Tenn. While in Knoxville, he worked at the County Hospital.
He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and served some of his 3 ½ years in England and France with the 106th Evacuation Hospital, 3rd Army. Following his discharge, he continued his specialty training in eyes, ear, nose and throat at Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago.
    He married Zoe E. Jenkins on Sept. 7, 1938, in Albia.
    The couple moved to Sioux City in 1948, where he joined the practice of Dr. Joe Dvorak and Dr. T. R. Gittens. He continued his practice with Dr. Virgil Kirkegaard and Dr. R. Bruce Bedell at Siouxland Opthalmologist P.C., until retiring in 1993.
    He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Phi Kappa Sigma Social Fraternity, Phi Rho Sigma the Medical Fraternity, and the American Legion. He served as president of Woodbury County Medical Society in 1961. He was a member of Iowa Medical Society, served as president of St. Joseph’s Medical Staff, and served on the board of directors of the Sioux City Chamber of Commerce and Sioux City Country Club. He enjoyed golfing and wintered in Florida.
    Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Dr. George Allen Heimann and Margaret C. Allan of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and Dr. William and Carol G. Heimann of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter and her husband, Mary E. and James Linn of Iowa City, Iowa; five grandchildren, Katherine Brandel, Rebecca Linn, Matthew Wesley Allan, and Kathryn and Margaret Heimann; a great-granddaughter; a sister-in-law, Aileen Pabst, of Albia; and several nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Dr. DeWayne Jenkins; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Bovenmyer.

Verne Rodney Heimann

    Dr. Verne Rodney Heimann, 87, of Sioux City, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000 at a Sioux City retirement center. He will be buried at 2 p.m., Saturday, October 7, 2000 in the Oakview Cemetery in Albia.
