Born in Center, Texas in the year 1887 to William and Lou Allen Sinclair-Potts he grew up with nine siblings.

Leaving his job as a dry goods salesman in Center, John traveled to Galveston on May 12th, 1917 and joined the US Coast Guard at age 30 a month after the United States entered World War I. He was assigned to the US Coast Guard Cutter Comanche that patrolled the gulf coast. He served aboard for 18 months obtaining the rank of Oiler First Class. John was honorably discharged from the US Coast Guard in New York, New York on May 11th, 1919 and awarded the World War I Victory Medal and the honorable discharge lapel pin.

He returned to his family’s farm and later became a bookkeeper. On November 11, 1939, 21 years after WW I he married Miss. Elizabeth O’Banion. Mr. Potts passed away in the VA Hospital in Houston, Texas after a stay of 46 days. He and wife Lizzie now rest in the Garden of Last Supper, Oaklawn Memorial Park, Center, Texas.
