Edith Genevieve McDermott attended school at the Convent of Visitation and Convent of Mercy in Mobile,Alabama. At age 24 she volunteered for the Army Nurse Corp. She graduated from the Garfield Memorial Hospital training program in May 1918.

She was assigned to the War Dispensary in Washington D.C from April 20 1918 - Oct 31, 1918. From Oct 31, 1918-Dec 8, 1918 she was assigned to the Mobilization Station Base Hospital 78, New York. On December 8, 1918, Edith sailed on the SS Pocahontas from Hoboken, N.J. to France.

From Dec 8, 1918 to Feb 28, 1919 she was at Base Hospital 97 in Allerey, Cote-d"or, Bourgogne, France. From Feb 28, 1919 to May 31, 1919 she was at Camp Hospital 108 in Mesvres, Saone-et-Loire, Bourgogne, France. Then from May 31, 1919 to June 27, 1919 she was at the Hospital Center in Vannes, France. She served as both a field and emergency room nurse in France.

She returned to the United States on the SS Imperator and arrived in Hoboken, NJ USA on 20 June 1919, where she reported to the Nurses Demobilization Station at Hotel Albert. She departed the nurses demobilization station on June 27, 1919 and went to Washington D.C.. She recieved 33 days of final leave and was discharged from Army Nurse Corp.

In March 1922 the was recommended to the Navy Nurse Corp and was assigned to Panama Canal where she served until 1925.
