The serious wounds S/Sgt. Charles E. Gallow, aged 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. N.L. Gallow of 1526 Eighteenth street, suffered April 22 in Germany were fatal to him, a war department telegram yesterday disclosed.

Last letter from the soldier to his parents was received Friday, postmarked April 21, the day before he was hurt. It was his second battle injury, the previous one having entitled him to a Purple Heart Medal. He has also won a Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service and his unit was awarded the Presidential citation. A tankman, Sgt. Gallow was attached to Gen. Patton's 3rd army from last reports to his family, although they believed he may have been transferred to Gen. Hodge's 1st army. He enlisted Jan. 16, 1939, trained at Fort George C. Meade, Md., Fort Bragg, N.C., and Camp Patrick Henry, Va., in addition to undergoing maneuvers in various states. He has been overseas since 1943, participating in the invasions of north Africa, Sicily and Italy, then going to England and thence across the channel for D-Day June 6, the invasion of Normandy and Germany.

The sergeant's family came to Altoona from Butler and McKeesport, the sergeant attending school in the former city. Charles E. Gallow was born in Masontown, Pa., June 21, 1919, the son of N.L. and Mary I. (Hammitt) Gallow. In addition to his parents he is survived by two brothers and a sister, 1st Sgt. J.B. in the Philippines, Lt. Norman now in the Marianas and Dorothy at home.
