Isaac Newton Broy was a native Virginian solider in the Civil War serving for the Confederate Army 6th Regiment Virginia Cavalry.

Isaac Broy was born in 1845 in Warren County, Virginia. Broy was the middle child of Addison Broy and Catharine Susan Martin. He had four siblings, who were all boys. Isaac’s two older brothers both also served in the Civil War for the Confederate Army, however his two little brothers did not. Isaac Broy enlisted to the Army on October 21st 1861, which leads to the conclusion he was very young, at least sixteen, when he was sent off to war. Before Broy was enlisted he was taking after his father’s footsteps becoming a farm laborer and undertaker which after the war he eventually returned to.

Broy was deployed at Camp Letcher on October 26th, 1861 under captain Dulany. During Broy’s time in the civil war he suffered from poor health constantly, which is shown in Civil War records that show he was absent from the company muster roll. This was most likely because of the fact that Broy had poor health. His records show that Broy was sick frequently throughout his time serving in the civil war. Illness was common in the 1860’s due to bad living conditions but in Broy’s case he was very lucky due to the fact that he was sick often, but was able to not only survive through the entire war, but also for many years after till 1911. According to records when Broy was present in war he was arrested a couple of times and had to be traded for another prisoner in order to return back to the Confederate Army.

Presumably when he finally recovered from numerous illnesses he was captured and arrested on February 13th, 1863 in Front Royal, Virginia. Later on, on March 11th, 1863 he was then transferred to Camp Chase, Ohio where he would eventually be exchanged for two and a half weeks later. When he got back he was checked in to Chimborazo Hospital for an unknown disease on April 5th, 1863 in Richmond, VA. The very next day he was then checked out of that hospital and transferred to Receiving and Wayside Hospital, which was also in Richmond, Virginia. The records don’t show why he was transferred so quickly or why he really couldn’t return to the war at the time.

All in all Isaac Newton Broy was an extremely brave and courageous young man who loyally fought for the Confederacy. He overcame many obstacles many kids today at his age could never imagine and luckily lived a long life in his hometown of Warren County, Virginia where he married Margaret Short Broy and eventually had 4 kids. He ended up passing away in July 1911 after 66 years of living.
