Killed, Mid-Air Collision (KMAC): Douglas B-18A Bolo bombers (s/n: 37-576 and s/n: 37-583). On 17 June 1940, a squad of four twin-engine B-18 medium bombers took off from Mitchel Field on Long Island. While gaining altitude, and flying in a practice V-formatlon, two of the planes collided over a block of homes in the town of Bellerose Manor in Queens Boro. They fell from the air spreading metal, glass, and flaming fuel all over the area. Twelve people (11 in the planes and one on the ground) died. Lt. Burlingame was in command of #37-576, and Lt. Bylander was piloting B-18A serial #37-583.
