2nd Lt. W.E. Henderson, Sr. -

Sept 1917 he was drafted into the army reporting to the 82nd Div. company H 327 Inf. at Ft. Gordon which was then located at present day Chamblee Airport just to the NE. of Atlanta. Became a Cpl. by line-up muster. Was at the front of the line. By the time he shipped out to France May/June 1918 he was a Sgt. still in the 82nd. Did night patrols in the right flank end of the American lines in the St Mihiel sector. Was sent to officer school Sept. 1918 while in France. Missed the St Mihiel American offensive and beginning of the Meuse Argonne offensive due to that. Was made 2nd Lt in the 77th Div. 308th inf.and was sent with them on Oct. 9th 1918, Going over the Top, to help rescue fellow members of the 77th that were trapped by the Germans, in the so called Lost Battalion. Not lost but cut off. 10th of Oct. 1918 sick and sent to Nice, France on the Riviera to recover. Was town Major of two french villages until April 1919. Came back state side May 1919 and discharged from army June 1919.
