Gary Lane Peisen, 79, formerly of Des Moines, Iowa, Hagerstown, Md., and Meridianville, Ala., passed away peacefully Dec. 2, 2012, at Ridgecrest Nursing Home in Forney, Texas.

Born Aug. 10, 1933, in Des Moines, he was the son of the late Dr. Conan Peisen and Almeda (Garn) Peisen, and a graduate of Kemper Military College in Boonville, Mo.

He was a retired Chief Warrant Officer 4 from the U.S. Army. He served overseas in Germany and Iran, and completed two tours during the Vietnam War. He served in the infantry, special operations and counterintelligence. During his service, he was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment; 18th Infantry Regiment; 77th Special Forces Group; and the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command. His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Unit Commendation with one oak leaf cluster, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Germany), Overseas Service Ribbon with three stars, National Defense Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Good Conduct Medal with bronze clasp, Parachutist Badge, Master Parachutist Badge and Expert Infantryman Badge.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Anna (Demopulous) Peisen; and his third wife, Melanie (Blix) Peisen.

He is survived by his five children,
Laura (Peisen) Dowerah of Waterloo, Iowa,
Conan E. Peisen and wife, Irma, of Yerevan, Armenia,
Derek J. Peisen of Cedar Falls, Iowa,
Shireen F. Peisen of Hagerstown, and
Rachel (Peisen) Parks and husband, Jay, of Hagerstown;
by nine grandchildren,
Eric and Jugeswar Dowerah,
Eligio and Erika Peisen,
Alison and Josephine Parks, and
Chelsea, Ariel and Conan Peisen;
by cousin, Almeda (Garn) Maynard and husband, Ted; and
by niece, Caroline Valenzuela of Rockwall, Texas.

A Mass Intention in his name will be celebrated for his 80th birthday at St. Ann's Church, Hagerstown, on Aug. 9, 2013.
