Pittsgrove, Salem County, New Jersey

Daniel and his brothers Davis, David and Joseph were all members of Col. Cornielius Nieukirk's Pittsgrove Foot Millita this Millitia unit was part of Holmes 2nd Battalion of New Jersey Millita. All of the men in this unit were members of the Pittsgrove Presbyterian Church located in Daretown, Salem County, New Jersey. They were responsible for supressing incursions by British Troops from Philadelphia that were attempting to forage for supplies in the southern counties of New Jersey. These same local millitia troops helped General (Mad) Anthony Wayne obtain supplies for General Washingston's troops located at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78 thus preventing that Army from starving to death.
