Thomas was very patient in waiting out Confederate Lt. Gen. John Hood before attacking at the Battle of Nashville on 15 December 1864. Thomas waited so long to attack that he was upsetting General Grant, who sent a replacement for Thomas, Maj. Gen. John A. Logan. Before Logan arrived, Thomas began his attack. Thomas had a massive force against Hood, and the battle is considered one of the most succesfull attacks of the Civil War for the Union.
