Peter Lawyer was born in December 1761 in Landisburg, Perry Co., Penn. Despite his name, he is of German origin, but with the spelling change of the last name (originally, the name was probably "Leyerin", or something similar), it has been difficult to identify who his parents were. He married a woman named Elizabeth Heiney, and they had five children, four daughters and a son.
Peter Lawyer fought in the Revolutionary War, serving as a private in the 10th Regiment (which later also absorbed the 11th Regiment), Pennsylvania Continentals, for 3 years 11 months from 1777, under Captain George Ross, and later under Colonel Richard Humpton. That means he enlisted at the age of 16. He was at the battles of Brandywine (Penn.), Paoli (Penn.), Germantown (Penn.), and Springfield (N.J.). He later received a pension for his service. He died in 1835, in Landisburg.
