Stanley Wisnicky nearly drowns when a German torpedo sank the transport on which he was among the ill. As he clung to a heaving mass of wreckage a United States cruiser drew up alongside and he was pulled to safety. A second rescuer, another of Uncle Sam's destroyers, steamed toward the scene.

Hearing the names of the friendly ships as he was being pulled aboard, Stanley recognized one of them as being his brother's boat. A wireless communication sent the news to his brother, on the approaching ship, and in a few minutes the brothers were in each other's arms.

Stanley enlisted in the regular army last summer (1917), and after doing border duty, went across with the first of Pershing's troops. He became ill with tuberculosis and was on his way back to America when the torpedo hit.

His older brother, Walter, left Kewaunee high school before commencement last June (1917) to re-enlist in the navy as a Boatswain's Mate.
