Company C 48th Infantry
This organization was a part of the 4th Bridge, 1st Division 16 Corps of the Union Army, Commanded by General U.S. Grant, during the siege and Defense of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and served in the lines during that battle from June 12 until July 4, 1865, the date of the surrender of the City by General Pemberton, the Commander of the Conferate Forces.
William M. Sneed enlisted in Company C 48th Regiment Ill.Volunteers on Sept, 1, 1861 at the age of 19 discharged Aug. 18, 1862 with a gun shot wound to the right wrist.
He reenlisted Nov. 1, 1862 and honorable discharged Aug. 15, 1865 at Little Rock Arkansas. At the time he was discharged he had chronic diarrhea, rheumatism and failing eye sight.
