Willard was a medical officer in the army, serving in Minnesota, in the area of epidemiology and infectious diseases. The photo is of him in his army uniform with my mother, on the front steps of their home in Morningside. He continued his work as an epidemiologist with the Minnesota state board of health, diagnosing and quarantining cases of infectious diseases, especially on the White Earth Reservation in Northern Minnesota. He also wrote and presented papers on diseases of the time, and how they might be treated, to local and national medical associations. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, and was my grandfather that I never met. He tripped and fell down the steps at work, and sustained a massive head injury, 13 years before I was born.
