From the tiny town of Byesville, Ohio, emerged a fierce nurse. Called an “Angel of Caring” by some and a heroine by others, Lt. Blanche F. Sigman gave her life for her country as she cared for her patients.

In the fall of 1907, a young Ohio couple welcomed their first baby into the world and named her for her mother. Blanche Faye Sigman was born to Joseph Allen Sigman and Blanche Whitis Sigman on November 7, 1907. The Sigmans had married 16-months earlier when he was 18 and she was 16.[i]

Sadly, Blanche’s mother did not live to see her grow up as she died just three days after giving birth.[ii] She was just 17.[iii] Joseph turned to his sister, Quintella Sigman Cronk, a nurse, for help with the newborn baby.[iv] Blanche is taken in to live with Aunt Quintella and her grandparents, Raleigh “Rolla” and Sarah Jane “Sadie” Sigman. In the 1910 census, she is 3 years old and is living with them and two of her other aunts on a farm they own on Grendale Road in Cambridge, Ohio. Her grandfather is a veteran.[v]

Her father, Joseph, just 21, remarried in 1909, and is also living in Cambridge with his new wife, Jessie Mae Wade, and their one-year-old Velma Virginia Sigman Thompson. He is working as a coal miner.[vi] While Blanche grew up with her Aunt Quintella as her foster mother, she remained close with her father and his second family, according to a niece’s interview in the Akron Beacon Journal in 2008.[vii]

When Blanche is just eight, she suffers a second loss when the grandfather who is helping raise her passes away. Rolla died in 1915.[viii] In the 1920 census, Blanche is 13 and the family has moved off the farm they owned and into a rental house on 10th Street. She is being raised by her widowed grandmother, Sadie, and Aunt Quintella. The family is being supported by her Aunt Bertha’s work as a decorator in a glass factory.[ix] Her father, Joseph, lives in the same town and he and his wife, Jessie..[x]

Blanche graduated from Byesville High School in 1926.[xi]

During her growing-up years, Blanche acquired nine stepbrothers and sisters born to her father, Joseph, and her stepmother, Jessie:[xii] Valma V. Sigman, 1909, Dorothy F. Sigman, 1912, Richard H. Sigman, 1913, Robert G. Sigman, 1914, Ronald J. Sigman, 1916, Sarah Jane Sigman, 1920, Roger R. Sigman, 1924, Billie E. Sigman, 1928 and Franklin Dean[xiii] Sigman, 1934.[xiv]

HER LIFE BEFORE MILITARY

Blanche left her native Ohio and headed to New York where she spent three years in nurses’ training at Bellevue Hospital.[xv] She graduated in the class of 1929.[xvi] Then, she became an employee of Bellevue Hospital in New York on January 14, 1930 at a salary of $1,080.[xvii] During her time nursing in New York, she also worked at the New York State Department of Health, Brooklyn Visiting Nursing Association and Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service.[xviii]

In 1940, as the war years loom, Blanche, now 32, is renting an apartment in the Brooklyn area of New York and she has a roommate, Gertrude Caltan, 35, from California. Both women are hospital nurses.[xix]

After that, she went to work as a traveling nurse in the Buffalo, New York area. After her work there, she returned to Ohio. She attended the University of Akron[xx] and Kent State University in Kent, Ohio and worked for a year for the Summit County[xxi] Health Department as a field supervisor of nurses.[xxii] She taught prenatal and maternal care as well as the care of preschool and elementary children.[xxiii] She was a member of the First Methodist Church.[xxiv]

She then returned to New York to work as a staff nurse at Governeur Hospital in Manhattan. When she decided to continue her studies at New York University, she moved to private duty nursing. Just before enlisting, she was living in Brooklyn and working as a public health nurse.[xxv]

HER MILITARY STORY

Blanche Faye Sigman enlisted in the United States Army Nurses Corps on July 28, 1942 at Fort Knox, Kentucky. By February of 1943, she was headed overseas where she was in various theaters of war.[xxvi]

Lt. Blanche Sigman was assigned to the 95th Evacuation Hospital. They were first aboard a hospital ship. Sigman wasn’t just nursing patients. As a Chief Nurse, she had a lot of nurses to worry about and she did, according to various notes in the book “And if I Perish: Frontline U.S. Army Nurses in World War II” by Evelyn M. Monahan and Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee. She tended to nurses who were ill, checked on their safety, hunted for them after bombings and had to serve as an example of strength as they witnessed the horrors of war.

HOSPITAL SHIP BOMBING

Her hospital ship, HMHS “Newfoundland[xxvii],” a British hospital ship, was bombed and fired on by German planes outside the Gulf of Sarerno’[xxviii] on September 13, 1943.[xxix] The first bomb hit near the ship at 5 a.m. blowing the doors off of hinges, shattering walls and breaking mirrors.[xxx] Sigman survived the September, 1943 bombing.[xxxi] According to newspaper reports of the day, dispatches emphasized that “the coolness of the nurses helped prevent heavy casualties in the period when the bombs were shattering walls and blowing doors from hinges of the mercy ship.[xxxii] Some women were helped from their trapped rooms by a rescue squad that broke down the jammed door and removed them from the sinking vessel.[xxxiii]

“The girls acted wonderfully. The sailors said they never could have saved us if we had become hysterical,” Sigman said when she wrote about the attack, according to the Akron Beacon Journal newspaper. She was first awakened by the sound of a bomb, so she dressed and went up on the ship’s deck. When she encountered others who said they had not heard a bomb, she went back to bed. Right after that, a bomb hit the ship. Using a flashlight, she found other nurses and made way to evacuate the ship.[xxxiv]

“When we finally reached the water by sliding down the rope ladders, many of us had severe rope burns. We found 75 packed into one lifeboat. The bomb had punctured one end of the boat and we used helmets to bail out the water,” Blanche said.[xxxv]

Some of the girls would start down the ladders nude and the sailors would pull them back and give them their pants, The Plain Speaker reported.[xxxvi] Other hospital ships took the nurses to North Africa for treatment and rest.[xxxvii] They landed in North Africa with the U.S. Fifth Army on April 5, 1943.[xxxviii]

FRENCH MOROCCO, NORTH AFRICA

Because the nurses, who had lost their belongings in the ship’s bombing, had so little clothing, Akron, Ohio’s Red Cross chapter sent them boxes of crocheted socks, warm clothing, and cosmetics during the holidays.[xxxix]

In North Africa near French Morocco[xl], the nurses were housed in tents and worked at a thousand-bed evacuation hospital. Lt. Blanche Sigman was the Chief Nurse of this huge hospital with the Fifth United States Army. An article in the Akron Beacon Journal notes the hospital was a bustling place with doctors, nurses, and enlisted men from all parts of the United States. Nurses went to work preparing the wards and settling patients into bed. Gauzes, bandages, and gowns were sterilized in steam tanks and instruments were being boiled in water. According to the article “American nurses seemed able to adapt themselves quickly to this pioneer existence. They receive no special dispensations because of their sex, nor do they ask for any.” The women live five to a tent and sleep on mosquito-netted cots.[xli]

ANZIO, ITALY

Sometime around January of 1944, Blanche’s posting was moved from North Africa to Italy.[xlii]

Despite the ship bombing, she wrote a letter back to the states that read “Please don’t worry too much about me. I am really very happy for I feel that I am doing something in this war that is worthwhile.” Her letter was quoted in the Akron Beacon Journal newspaper.

Her new work in Italy took her to the frontlines. “Blanche Sigman is one of those known to be in a front-line evacuation hospital in Italy,” reported the Akron Journal newspaper in February of 1944.[xliii]

On January 22, 1944, 36,000 men were ordered ashore at Anzio, Italy. They were to secure a beach. This battle would eventually lead to the fall of Rome.[xliv]

When the American nurses arrived, wearing fatigues and helmets, they rapidly underwent German air raids before they had time to dig foxholes, according to a Nebraska State Journal reporter who interviewed Blanche.

“We slept on the decks coming over and had several alerts during the night. We came ashore without getting our feet wet and then ran into two air raids before we have unpacked and made up our faces. However, the soldiers were very nice in helping us complete foxholes. We were offered a house with bombproof shelter to sleep in but we are sleeping in tents to be near the patients. The girls wanted it that way,” Blanche said.[xlv]

In “And if I Perish: Frontline U.S. Army Nurses in World War II” by Evelyn M. Monahan and Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee, the book describes the nurses worrying after each other. As explosions, shells and bombs rained down, there was a process to call roll after extremely close hits. Women would call out their names to each other to make sure they were all okay. These roll calls were going on day and night. At one point, Blanche became so annoyed at the continuous roll calls that she got some men to move her tent so she would not have to hear them. Some of the nurses joked that Sigman’s advanced age of 36 made her too nervous and that she was probably too old to remember what it was like to be young.[xlvi]

Resistance to the landing by Axis forces were strong and Blanche’s hospital tents were soon filling with casualties.[xlvii] There was no place on the beachhead out of range of the German bombing and that included the hospital tents.[xlviii]

Being near the front line was difficult. Blanche wrote home to say the experience was “rugged going.” She said “I’m quite nervous having just crawled from under my bed, during an air raid. I’m also groggy from having taken so much aspirin,” The Akron Beacon Journal newspaper reported. “It’s surprising how close we get to these wounded boys and how well we get to know them,” she wrote.[xlix]

HER LAST DAY

During the Anzio campaign, there were 200+ Army nurses caring for 33,000 patients while being bombed and under gunfire.[l]

It was a terribly busy day for the 95th “with about 400 patients in the hospital, loaded ambulances coming in with freshly wounded, and the operating rooms, shock wards, and x-ray sections working at full capacity, at about 1,545 (patients),” from an excerpt of the official account.[li]

Major Arthur B. deGrandpre, ` a surgeon attached to the 95th Evac Hospital, wrote in his diary: “(It was) the blackest day in the history of the 95th Evacuation Hospital. About 14:30 (hours), a German bomber came over being chased by a British Spitfire. The enemy pilot dropped his load of bombs in our area – seven small antipersonnel bombs. Spitfire shooting at him.”[lii]

“She (Blanche) was working where I was when she told me to dig the foxhole,” Marion “Nan” Somes, a fellow nurse at Anzio, recalled in an interview with the IndyStar newspaper.[liii]

The Stars and Stripes newspaper told the tale of Blanche’s last day. It reported in a February 8th, 1944 edition that the previous day had been perilous for the 95th Evacuation Hospital.

A Lutfwaffe pilot blasted the hospital area, a half-mile from the nearest military target, dropping fragmentation bombs in an area containing a large cloth Red Cross. These butterfly type bombs were designed to explode after a contact five feet above the ground, the newspaper reported. One bomb hit the edge of the cloth. The antipersonnel bombs fell on the operating, administrative and ward areas.

“We heard the crash. We jumped for our helmets and then it was over, and we were all outside with all the bandages we could get, taking care of the wounded and covering up the dead. It was all we could do,” said nurse Second Lt. Helen Anderson of the bombing a few hours earlier.[liv]

The story of another nurse, Adeline Simonson, and her recollections of the bombing appeared in the AANA Journal, the publication of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Simsonson had been in the operating room assisting a surgeon when the bomb hit. The surgeon shoved her under the operating table. When the surgery was complete, she came out to see white nurse’s shoes sticking out under blankets and realized there were nurse casualties.[lv]

Lt. Blanche F. Sigman became a casualty of WW2 that day. During the Battle of Anzio, Italy on February 7, 1944,[lvi] she was killed while she aided wounded soldiers on the frontline of Anzio Beachhead.[lvii] She was one of the three nurses killed when the 95th was bombed by a German plane as it fled from a British fighter over Nettuno.[lviii] The other two nurses who died were Second Lieutenant Carrie Sheetz and Lieutenant Marjorie G. Morrow.[lix]

A few days later, on February 10th, two more nurses died from bombs. They were First Lieutenant Glenda Spelhaug and Second Lieutenant La Verne Farquhar of Sidney, Texas.[lx]

Blanche was the first woman from Akron to die in the war. Her father and stepmother were informed by the War Department of her death on March 4, 1944, about a month after she lost her life.[lxi] She was temporarily interred on the Anzio beachhead next to her patients.[lxii]

Her great-niece, Shelley Martin, told the Akron Beacon Journal newspaper that her grandfather, (Blanche’s father) was always talking about Blanche.[lxiii]

Blanche was 36.

MEMORIALS

A United States Army hospital ship was christened “The Blanche F. Sigman” in honor of Lt. Blanche Sigman who lost her life at Anzio. The former cargo vessel, the S. S. Stanford White, was transformed into a white hospital ship with modern equipment.[lxviii] Her portrait was presented to the ship’s personnel before they left on their first hospital voyage.[lxix] Her half-brother, Dean Sigman, recalled that his mother and father attended the christening of the ship.[lxx] After duty as a hospital ship, the ship became the Blanche F. Sigman United States Army transport ship. Eventually the ship was considered surplus and then scrapped in 1974.[lxxi]

When the hospital ship named for her, The Blanche F. Sigman, later sailed past Anzio beach, the ship lowered its flag to half-mast. The ship’s Chaplin read a memorial service and some 600 crew and patients, who were able, stood at attention for the ceremony.[lxxii]

American Legion Post 639 was named Blanche Sigman Post.[lxxiii]

VFW Post 2901 in Cambridge, Ohio has a wall display dedicated to Blanche Sigman.[lxxiv]

The Disabled American Veterans Hall in Cambridge has a marker to her.[lxxv]

The Ladies Auxiliary to the Military Order of the Purple Heart presents scholarships in her name.[lxxvi]

HER MEMORIAL SERVICES AND GRAVE

More than 150 nurses – all in uniform- attended a First Methodist Church in Akron memorial service for Blanche Sigman. In attendance were her father, Joseph, and her stepmother, Jessie, along with other family members. Her former boss, Blanche Booth of the county health department, spoke about her former employee.

A memorial service was held in the Protestant Chapel at Bellevue Hospital on March 17, 1944 for Blanche Sigman, an alumnus of their School of Nursing.[lxxvii]

“Lieutenant Sigman’s whole life was one of service to humanity. Her creed was that expressed by Emerson. ‘If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, I shall not have lived in vain.’ Her death under fire should be an inspiration to every woman in the nursing profession,” Booth said.[lxxviii]

Lt. Balance Sigman’s body was exhumed in 1948 from its burial at Anzio and returned to Ohio.[lxxix] She is buried in the Enon Cemetery in Byesville, Ohio and shares a grave marker with her mother who died following her birth.[lxxx]
