Remembering American Army Nurse Aleda Ester Lutz who died on 1st November 1944.

Aleda was born in Michigan on 9th November 1915 to German immigrants and grew up on a farm with her 9 siblings. Aleda Lutz enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps in February 1942 and became a flight nurse with the 802nd Medical Air Evacuation Squadron of the 12th Air Force. They flew in unmarked transport planes which were used to carry supplies to front lines and transport patients backing out, making them legal targets for enemy fire.

On 1st November 1944, she was fatally injured in a Medevac C-47 crash near Saint-Chamond, France. She was 28.

Aleda was the first American woman to die in combat during World War II and the first Army nurse to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross posthumously. She is fact the second highest-decorated woman in US military history.
