Jacob Kindey was born in 1840 to Mary (age 30) and John Kindey (age 31) in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was the second oldest of five children, Mary, Abraham, John, Catharine, and Margaret Ann.[1] Before Kindey was drafted into the war, he was a 22-unmarried carpenter.[2] On September 12, 1861, he enlisted at Attleboro into the 104th Pennsylvania regiment company F.[3]

The 104th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry was organized at Doylestown on September 20 to October 16, 1861. The regiment left for Washington, D.C, on November 6, 1861 and attached to Casey's Division. The regiment was assigned to defend Washington till March, 1862 until they were advanced to Manassas, VA. During March till May, they moved to the Peninsula, Siege of Yorktown, and fought in the Battle of Williamsburg. After, the regiment operated Bottom's Bridge and reconnaissance to Seven Pines during May 24. Movement around to White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill and Harrison's Landing continued during the duration of the summer months. On August 16-23, they moved to Yorktown, VA and was duty there till December 28. After, they moved to Morehead City, N.C, Port Harbor, S.C, and Folly and Morris Island, S.C during late December to February. The regiment was duty in South Carolina until April 4. After, they begun expedition against Charleston, S.C and was duty at Beaufort, S.C, till July. On July 18, they assaulted on Fort Sumter. They siege Fort Sumter from July 18- September 7, and operated against the fort and Charleston till June, 1864. After, they reconnaissance to Dafuskie Island, explored to John's Island, operated against Battery Pringle during May 11, 1864 to July 9. The regiment operated in Hilton Head, S.C till July and moved to Florida till August. They were ordered back to Washington, D.C., in September in order to defense south of the Potomac. On September 24, 1864, Kindey transferred from company F to B.[4] They were duty to escort trains to Sheridan's army till November. They moved to Bermuda Hundred, VA and siege operations against Petersburg and Richmond in December, 1864 to April, 1865. Petersburg fell on April 2. They were duty there till April 20 until they were moved to Norfolk, VA. They duty there until August 25, 1865 when they mustered out. [5]

Kindey died on August 28, 1865 because of acute dysentery in P,H. Norfolk, Virginia.[6] He was buried in Doylestown Mennonite Cemetery in Bucks County, PA in section A, row 21.[7]
