Personal Information about John H. Hubbard

Around August 18, 1836[1], Lavinia Hubbard gave birth to a John H. Hubbard in Harborcreek, Erie, Pennsylvania. He has an older brother and sister, Cynthia and Daniel, and one younger brother, Nathaniel[2].

Military Experience and the 145th Pennsylvania Infantry

John Hubbard was a Union Army soldier who enlisted on August 27, 1862 with his brother Nathaniel. Both were mustered into Company D of the 145th Pennsylvania Infantry in Erie County, and John served as a first lieutenant[3].

The 145th Pennsylvania Infantry was organized in Erie on September 5, 1862[4]. It was composed of men from the counties of Erie, Warren, Crawford, and Mercer in Pennsylvania. It was led by David B. McCreary and Charles M. Lynch for the three years that was in service, partaking in three battles in the civil war: Chambersburg, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. On September 11, John and his infantry were moved to Chambersburg to aid the forces against Robert E. Lees’ army at the South Mountain. With scarce supplies they were moved to Hagerstown, and on the 17th they were 10 miles from the battlefield of Antietam. Around noon the infantry reached the battlefield and moved into position to do picket duty, burying the dead and caring for the wounded, until the morning of the 19th. From there, they moved to Harpers Ferry to temporarily assist the Irish brigade, 1st brigade, 1st division, and 2nd corps. After their escapades with the Irish Brigade, John’s Infantry was moved to position in the charge on Marye’s Heights in the Battle of Fredericksburg, where it suffered a major loss in man power. Two hundred and twentysix men were killed or wounded and less than 500 men were engaged in the battle. Nine commissioned officers were killed and only 2 field officers in the entire brigade didn’t suffer an injury; John suffered an injury to the leg and it was amputated[5].

John H. Hubbards’ Death

John H. Hubbard died of his wounds suffered at the Battle of Fredericksburg on December 18, 1862. He is buried at the Northeast Cemetery in Erie County Pennsylvania[6]. Soon after his death, John’s mother, Lavinia, filed for soldiers’ pension in July of 1862. With proof of relationship, death, and service, she was granted pension of seventeen dollars a month starting June 10 of 1863[7].
