Before the War: Stephen G Hibbs was born in 1820 somewhere in Pennsylvania (exact location unknown). In 1860 Hibbs was living in Bucks County, Pennsylvania with his wife, Mary Hibbs, and his 3 sons, Frederic, Wilmer, and Lewis C. Hibbs. At the time of the 1860 Federal Census, Hibbs was working as a house carpenter in the Bensalem Township and owned roughly $300 dollars of private estate at the time.[1]

Enlistment and Regiment: Stephen Hibbs enlisted in the PA 104th Infantry in September 12, 1861[2] with many other residents from Bucks County. Hibbs began service, like most enlistees, on the day of his enlistment and was assigned to Company F within the 104th PA Infantry, which was comprised mostly of Buck County residents[3] and led by Captain Alfred Marple and Lt. David P. Hibbs (no relation). While in the regiment, Hibbs participated in the defenses of Washington until March 1862, the advance on Manassas, VA from March 10-15, and finally the siege of Yorktown which persisted from April 5 to May 4.[4]

Death: Hibbs died on June 13th 1862[5], over a month after the siege of Yorktown. It is presumed that Hibbs was injured in the siege of Yorktown and died of infection shortly thereafter. After Hibbs’s death, he was buried a day later on June 14th, 1862 in the Hampton National Cemetery, Hampton Virginia[6].
