Conrad Schonder came to America with Margaretha Schiek and her siblings.
It is believed they came here between the dates of 1846 and 1852. They were
married December 17, 1852 in Buffalo, N Y by Justice of the Peace James G Dickie. Their witnesses were Joseph Bensinger and Melaper Switzer. After
their first son, Martin was born in 1853 in Lancaster, N. Y. they moved to
Belleville, Il. and 3 more sons were born, Frank, John Conrad and Conrad William. Conrad enlisted in the Civil War on August 13, 1862 for 3 years in
Co. G, 82nd Infantry Regiment Ill. Volunteers as a Sec. Lt. He was killed in the Battle of Chancellorsville, where he was fighting with the Federal Troops under Major General Joseph Hooker. Margaretha raised her 4 sons in Belleville, Il.
and received $15. per month from the government as a pension for Conrad.
