Edward Alanson Tollman was born 16 April 1840 in Worcester, Massassachussets, the first child of Damile Tolman and Almira Davis. By 1861 when he enlisted in the Army, the family was living in Sabula, Iowa. Family legend is that Edward adopted the second L in Tollman following a clerical error as he left the Army. Rather than continue to deal with the administrative system of the Army, Edward just accepted the misspelling. His descendants continue to use the TOLLMAN spelling. Edward was a successful farmer in Marsland, Nebraska, dying 18 July 1909. He and Emma M Jacobson had six children. Emma's brother, Theodore and Edward's brother Frederick both served in the Army, both dying in Vicksburg, Mississippi. --Wendelynn Darnold Gunderson, 2nd great granddaughter of Edward and Emma Tollman.
