ILLIAM GOLDIE is a self-made man, who, without any extraordinary family or pecuniary advantages at the commencement of life, has battled earnestly and energetically, and by indomitable courage and integrity has achieved both character and fortune. To no man more than to Mr.William Goldie do the qualities which command admiration and respect belong. By sheer force of will and untiring effort he has made for himself-a name among the self-made men of Chicago.

He was born near Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, on March 16,1828, the son of William and Agnes (Neil) Goldie. He received his early education in the Presbyterian parochial schools, and later learned the carpenter’s trade. VVhen he was twenty years old, he left home and went to Glasgow, and worked at his trade until May,

1851,_when he said good-bye to his native land, resolved to seek his fortune in the land of liberty. He arrived in Chicago on the 6th of July, of that year.

The young man lost no time in securing employment, and the following day he went to work for Alexander Lloyd, who was at that time a large contractor. The following year, 1852, Mr. Goldie began business for himself, and in 1853 he added a sash, door and blind factory to his business, and from the very start he was successful, and continued his business until 1861, when he answered the call of President Lincoln for volunteers, and enlisted in a regiment called the “ Mechanic’s Fusileer” Regiment, afterward the Fifty-sixth Illinois Volunteers.
