Forward Program To Mark Graves

Charles W. Simmons, chairman of Graves Registry Committee, Sons of the American Revolution, addressed the Dauphin County Historical Society on January 20 on the subject "Revolutionary Cemeteries and Graveyards of Dauphin County." Mr. Simmons brought a most encouraging message as his organization is determined to carry out a program of locating and properly marking all graves of Revolutionary heroes which have hitherto been neglected. The Daughters of the American Revolution have also carried on this work in a thorough and efficient manner, and with both organizations striving toward the same goal, we can look for real accomplishments.

Seek Information On Forgotten Graves

Central Pennsylvania has been added to the district of Mr. Simmons, and he will visit localities in Huntingdon County in the near future. A number of letters have been received during the past year from readers telling of forgotten graves of Revolutionary soldiers. It is hoped others knowing of such graves will write and give me all possible information which will then be turned over to Mr. Simmons. From past information, I am led to believe this area possesses too many graves of forgotten heroes, and definite action in correcting the neglect should no longer be delayed.

Caleb Armitage's Grave Sought

For many years the writer has attempted to locate the grave of his great-great-grandfather, Caleb Armitage, captain of a Philadelphia battalion in the Revolution, who died in Mill Creek in 1832 at the age of 95 years. The grave of his son, Caleb, Jr., (my great-grandfather), who died in 1829, may be easily seen just north of that village in the little cemetery along the highway. Family tradition tells that Caleb, Sr., first came to this region with his uncle, James Armitage, in 1770 and settled in the upper Spruce Creek Valley, where they erected a mill. In a visit to the Graysville Cemetery several years ago the grave of James Armitage, the oldest in the cemetery, was found. A crude native stone, still in good condition, was inscribed: "James Armitage, died 1804, aged 84 years." Here was sufficient evidence of family tradition having been verified, but it seems strange that of the three, the grave of the ancestor last to pass on should be so difficult to find. As much valued assistance has been given in the past by Daily News readers, it is quite possible they may be the means of solving my problem as well. Should any person be in possession of any knowledge which would lead to locating the grave of Caleb Armitage, Sr., it will be highly appreciated by the writer.
