Capt. Lawrence E. Dickson, a member of the 100th Fighter Sqadron, was returnig to Ramitelli Air Base following a reconnaissance misssion to Prague, Czechoslovakia when his North American P-51D Mustang, named "Peggin'", encountered engine problems. He was able to bail out in the vicinity of Florence, Italy.

2nd Lt. Robert L. Martin wrote in a military report, "Capt. Dickson called me over the radio and told me he was ready to bail out. His canopy was jettisoned and the plane rolled over on its back. I did not see Capt. Dickson leave the plane and I was unable to observe a parachute because of the snow on the ground. Judging from the way the plane hit the ground, I do not believe the pilot was in the plane at the time of the crash."

Dickson's name is included on the Tablets of the Missing at the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial.
