Flight Officer (F.O.) Samuel Foreman was a pilot assigned to the 100th Fighter Squadron of the 332nd Fighter Group stationed at Ramitelli Air Base in Foggia, Italy. On January 21, 1945, Foreman, along with 45 other North American P-51 Mustangs, were flying bomber escort duty on a mission to attack oil storage facilities near Vienna, Austria. He was last seen over northern Yugoslavia after reporting engine trouble.
"F.O. Foreman started a turn with his number three man to escort him back to Ramitelli. His leader called and told him to return to formation. The last I saw him, he was completing a 360-degree turn and had started back towards the formation," wrote 1st Lt. Frank E. Roberts in his after action report.
Foreman was reported missing and was later confirmed dead; he was posthumously promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and his name was added to the Tablets of the Missing at the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial in Italy.
