Son of David Tate and Comfort Holmes Knox, and husband of Lucille Hughes (Lucy) Moody. He was an officer in the War of 1812. Later served as sheriff of Grainger Co., TN, and was Grainger Co. court clerk from 1836 to 1852. He and Lucy lived in a large plantation on the Holston River, where they raised six children: Julia Fain; David N.; George Wm.; John Cocke; Edward L.; and Samuel N.
