Ray Olen Hastings was my grandfather. He died when I was a child, but I remember him. He was a hard worker. He was fairly quiet. He doted on his teacup terrier dog, Spot. He told me when they brought Spot home, as a puppy, he was so tiny he could fit into the palm of his hand. For a special treat once in a while Spot would get a piece of steak.
Ray Olen Hastings grew up in Barry, in Pike county, Illinois. His parents and theirs before them, were farmers. Ray and his twin Ollie Fay were born on the family farm in Beverly, Adams county, Illinois. Ollie later died, as a toddler, from a childhood illness.
Ray Olen Hastings liked to hunt and fish. He married Marguerite Warning, daughter of Arthur Warning & Iva May (Russell) Warning. Together they had six children - five boys, one girl. They lived in Quincy, Adams county, Illinois. Ray worked with chemicals at a factory there, and died in 1974 from cancer.
