GUYS, Tenn. - Retired CWO-4 Lawrence A. McCarter, 86, died Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at the Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth. He was born Jan. 12, 1921, in Alcorn County. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 30 years. He received his battlefield commission on Quadalcanal at the age of 19, spent 45 months in the South Pacific and retired as a senior CWO-4. After returning home, he farmed and raised cattle. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at McPeters Inc. Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Nat Mayhall officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Henry Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Maxine S. McCarter; one daughter, Rebecca M. Mercer of Smithfield, Va.; five brothers, Charles McCarter, Gene McCarter, Sonny McCarter, Paul McCarter and Johnny McCarter; two sisters, Marguerite M. Baker and Ethelyne M. Gurley; six grandchildren, Lawrence Aaron McCarter III, Sean McCarter, Moira McCarter Myers, Megan Helton Tucker, Gena Mercer Lashley and Clint Mercer; four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Arthur and Lillie Mae Smith McCarter; a daughter, Barbara McCarter Helton; a son, Lawrence Aaron McCarter Jr.; and two brothers.

Pallbearers will be Charles McCarter, Johnny McCarter, Gene McCarter, Michael Tucker, Aaron McCarter, Sean McCarter, Clint Mercer and Brian Lashley.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
