A large crowd of relatives and friends of the registrants were on hand to see the boys off. Messers R. V. Barkley and J. B. Glover, drummers, and J.M. Deaton carrying a United States flag, headed the March from the court house lawn to the station. The procession was composed of the departing boys and citizens. At the station the Red Cross ladies served cold drinks and gave each registrant a comfort bag. Other courtesies were shown and when the train pulled out from the station cheers and well wishes were given by the large crowd that had assembled. The group left Statesville and went to Camp Jackson, S.C.. then to Camp Sevier at Greenville, S.C.. for training. From there it was Camp Upton, Long Island. New York, and then overseas where the unit served on two fronts in France. This big delegation from Iredell followed the Iredell Blues, trained right behind them at Camp Sevier and were known as ''The Wildcats.
