Canton – Bernard J. Oaks 78 died at 8:50 am Thursday October 25, 2007 at Graham Hospital in Canton.

He was born on February 14, 1929 in Canton to Bernard R. and Gaye (Brillhart) Oaks, he married Betty J. Lounsberry on October 18, 1953 in Petersburg, IL. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons Steven Oaks of Aledo, IL., Daniel (Lori) Oaks of Canton, one daughter Barbara (John) Closen of Canton, Six grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Teresa Oaks Hubbard, and one brother Dr. Donald Oaks.

He was a Korean War Army veteran. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Canton.

Bernard served for 14 years as Fulton County Treasurer, 8 years on the Fulton County Board and 4 years as Fulton County Board Chairman.

He was a licensed Funeral Director for 43 years. He was a 50 year member of the Clinton Lodge #15 in Petersburg, and a member of the American Legion Post 16 in Canton.

Services will be held at 11 am Saturday at the Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton Rev. Shane Smith will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour before services. Burial will be at Oak Hill cemetery in Lewistown.

Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church.
