A memorial was placed in his home state in Gardner Cemetery, Gardner, Johnson County, Kansas, in Plot: Section 4 Row 30.
He also served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. In WWII, he was a Marine pilot in VMF-114, and fought at the Battle of Peleliu, fierce battle to say the least. He flew the Marine F4U Corsair. Combat began on 17 September 1944. They were an All Weather fighter (AW).
Prior to this battle, his unit flew strike missions against Japanese forces in the Bismarck Islands (off New Guinea). After Peleliu, they continue attack Japanese force in the western Caroline Islands (Truk, etc.) until War's end and they shipped home.
