My Father

My father was killed in the Vietnam War on May 28, 1970, three weeks before I was born. Ironically, I was due to be born on August 3rd, his birthday! It's hard for me to believe that I've lived more than 10 years longer than my own father did. Even so, I'll always think of myself as his little girl I never got a chance to know him and he never saw me either. Every once in a while I will dream about him, look through pictures of him and my mom, who were childhood sweethearts, or read through letters that he wrote to my mom from Vietnam (there is at least one for every day that he was gone). Still I long for the day when I will see his face, hear his voice or feel his embrace. One day that time will come. Until then, not a day goes by that I don't think about him, wishing he was here today. There are so many things in my life that I wish I could have shared with him, both good and bad, times when I needed or wanted my dad to be there with me. Even though he hasn't been here with me physically, a part of him is with me always. Isn't it strange that someone I never knew could have such an influence on me. Those who knew him look at me and see my dad, and I have inherited some of his mannerisms and interests, and I love sports almost as much as he did. What I wouldn't give to play a game of softball or golf with him. I'm very proud of all of these identities to him, because I feel as if a part of him lives on in me. And for my dad, I've always strived to be the best at everything I do. I want him to be proud of me, to be watching over me with a great big smile on his face and a feeling of great pride, the way I feel when I think of him. One day we will be together, but unitl then I'll keep visiting his grave and his name on the Wall, dreaming about him, and loving him as much as any daughter could possibly love her dad!

A Friend

Angela - Your dad was a boyhood friend of mine. I lost track of him until I came across
his name on The Wall some time back. We spent the last night before I left for Vietnam
running around together. That was the last time I saw him. I guess our paths diverged
after that. We had some good times together then. I'm sure he's proud of what you've
done with your life. Just know that he was a good guy.

Delta 4/9 Infantry lost two men killed during a firefight in Cambodia on 28 May 1970: Company Commander 1LT Andrew D. Smith , Wakefield, RI, and SP4 Ronald A. Krebsbach, St Paul, MN. Although officially assigned to the HQ Company, Sp 4 Krebsbach was in the field with Delta Company. NOT FORGOTTEN
