Edgar's obituary from THE AMARILLO GLOBE. AMARILLO, TEXAS THURSDAY. JUNE 2, 1945. Edgar L. Sikes listed as dead after having been reported as missing in action for more than a year. Staff Sgt. Edgar Leroy Sikes, son of Mr, and Mrs. E. L.. Sikes, has now been reported by the War Department as killed in action. Parents of the soldier received the information in a telephone call from Mrs. Sikes, widow of the Sergeant, who said she had received a War Department telegram to that effect. Sergeant Sikes was an engineer on a B-17 Flying Fortress. His plane failed to return to its base from a mission over France on June 19, 1944, one day before his twenty- second birthday. At that time the Sergeant had been in the Army for two years.and overseas for three months. His plane went down somewhere in the Channel Islands but full details have not yet been learned.by his parents. Sergeant Sikes was a graduate of Tahoka High School and was manager of a grocery store there before entering the Army. His widow is the former Miss Lily May Clinton of Takoha. They have one child, a daughter, Sandra Lee, 2 years old.
