On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched an invasion of German-occupied France, code-named Operation OVERLORD, beginning with an amphibious assault on the beaches of Normandy. Troop carriers loaded with both infantry and armored units crossed the channel with the help of air support from planes stationed in England.

Private Rodger Dean Andrews, who joined the U.S. Army in Washington, was a member of Company C, 37th Engineer Combat Battalion. On the night of June 6, the forces on Omaha Beach on Normandy suffered heavy losses from enemy shelling and strafing by enemy aircraft. Private Andrews was killed in action during the fighting that night, and his remains could not be recovered in the chaotic battle conditions. Post-war searches of the area failed to locate his remains, and he is still unaccounted-for. Today, Private Andrews is memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, France.
