First Lt. Edgar Arthur Wade, 23, of Salt Lake City was killed in action in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge on January 14, 1945. He was the son of Stanley W. Wade, a carpenter who was born in Utah, and Florence Hoyt Sears Wade, originally from South Dakota.

He married the former Winnifred Woolsey of Salt Lake on May 17, 1942, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Salt Lake and went into the service the same month. In 1948, stained glass windows honoring parishioners who served in the war were placed at the church, along with a plaque bearing his name and those of two others who died in the war.

Lt. Wade, who had served 15 months in the Aleutians and eight months in the European theater of operations, had received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered late in November. He was reassigned to active duty with the infantry December 23 and was killed three weeks later. He was in the 320th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster

He was born Dec. 19, 1921, in Portland, Ore., and was graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City in 1940. While in high school he served as cadet major in the ROTC. Survivors included his widow, parents, three sisters, Mrs. V.S. Morrison, Mrs. N.C. Dunn and Mrs. E.L. Reeves, Salt Lake City, and a brother, Stanley W. Wade Jr., San Francisco.

He is interred at the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial in Belgium.

His father died in 1961 and his mother in 1963. Following his death, his widow went to New York to study interior design. She remarried in 1953, had two children, and died in 2014 one week shy of her 90th birthday
