“Wesley E. Carter, army air corps, has been promoted from first lieutenant to captain, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Carter, of San Diego.
Carter was graduated by Pt. Loma High school and attended San Diego and Santa Barbara State colleges.
Commissioned a second lieutenant in August, 1940, he is stationed with the air group at Nashville, Tenn.”

"Capt. Carter Now Reported Killed in Action
First reported as missing in actin, Capt. Wesley E. Carter, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Carter, of 1766 Cable st., Ocean Beach, is now reported killed in action, during a bombing mission over Germany last September, his parents were notified today by the War department.
Capt. Carter was a graduate of Pr. Loma High school and state college. At the time of entering the service he was attending Santa Barbara state college.
The officer was well known in San Diego, having been an amateur boxer representing the San Diego club in 1938 and 1939.
His name figured prominently here when the crew of a disabled Liberator bomber of which he was a member, crashed near this city on Jan. 2, 1942, and crew members were forced to parachute to safety.
The captain's wife, Mrs. Bula Ballard Carter, lives in Long Beach. He has been overseas since April 1944, and was piloting a Flying Fortress of the Eight air force when shot down over German territory."

Official records state that one of his crew, who bailed with him from their wounded airplane, saw Wesley lynched by civilians on the ground. The witness was saved from lynching by Luftwaffa troups.
