Newton Cannon (N. C.) Howell, named after the early TN governor "Newton Cannon," is listed in many documents as "Newton K. (or "N. K.") Howell." On his headstone, he is called "Lieut. Newton K. Howell." He was a son of James H. Howell and Rebecca Unknown. In 1861, he married Mary E. Chapman, of Knox Co., TN. Mary E. was the daughter of Wm. B. Chapman and Anne Eliza Chamberlain. During the Civil War, Newton served as a lieutenant in the Confederate army. After Mary E.'s death, he and his children lived for a time (c1900) in Barbourville, Knox Co., KY. He died in 1915 while living with his son, Isaac E., in Marks Crk., Hamlet, Richmond Co., NC.
