INVALID OLD SOLDIER IS HEIR TO A FORTUNE

DAYTON, 0H., April 16. -Henry H. Hawthorn, one of the invalid soldiers in the soldiers' home, has just received notice that he has been made the beneficiary to the amount of from $200,000 to $500,000 left him by a woman out of gratitude for having saved her life many years ago. The woman is Mrs. Josephine Fairfax, who recently died in the South of France. Hawthorn was born in England, and came to the United States when a boy. Later he went to England on a visit. "While at Kenth bathing in the sea he saw a woman and her son in a boat, which capsized. Hawthorns being an expert swimmer succeeded in rescuing the woman, but the son was drowned. He returned to the United States and served in the army during the Civil war. A few years ago he met Mrs. Fairfax in England, and refused a reward which she urged him to take. He heard nothing more from her until he was informed of the bequest left to him.

Veteran Is Left a Fortune With Some Astonishing Conditions.

Dayton, Ohio, May 22.—Formal announcement has been sent Veteran Henry H. Hawthorne at the soldiers' home by the administrator of Mrs. Joseph Kelat of England that she has left him her fortune of about $2,500,000. Hawthorne saved the woman's life in the sea on the coast of Kent, England, in 1854. The will provides that he is to marry some good woman, build a church in New York city, where the needy are to be given relief, and, among other things, when he dies, he is to wear a military garb and be laid beside Mrs. Kelat in her burial vault. His widow is to receive $10,000 a year for life. He is permitted to sell any of the property except the chateau in France. Hawthorne will accept the conditions.

FORTUNE FOR A SOLDIER.
Reward for Saving Woman's Life Years Ago.
A special to the New York World from Dayton, Ohio, says: Henry H. Hawthorne of Company 27. at the Soldiers' Home, has received notice that he will receive from $200,000 to $500,000 left to him by the will of Mrs. Josephine Fairfax, who recently died in France.
Hawthorne who is of English birth, came this country while young. He was born in 1835. In 1854 he returned to his native land for a visit. At Kent, while swimming, he saw a young man and a woman in a small boat. They had ventured too far from shore, the wind had risen to a gale and soon the small craft was capsized.

Hawthorne struck out to rescue the unfortunates, Mrs. Fairfax and her son. The latter was drowned before Hawthorne could reach them, but the woman was saved.

Hawthorne returned to this country, enlisted in the army in 186, and went through the war. At the Soldiers' Home here he often received letters from Mrs. Fairfax.
