He was mustered in as a recruit Private in Battery D, 1st New Jersey Volunteer Light Artillery on February 23, 1864 (New Jersey Adjutant records list his last name as being "Flairden"). He was wounded in action near Malvern Hill, Virginia, on August 16, 1864, and had his leg amputated. He was sent to the United States Army General Hospital in Beverly, New Jersey, where he died of his wounds on September 15, 1864.....Beverly National Cemetery
