Anthony E. ''RedMazotas, 94, Retired Chief Master Sgt. and the oldest charter member of The Air National Guard, 118th Observation Squadron (Flying Yankees), 43rd Division now the 103rd Fighter Wing, died, Tuesday, (Dec. 1, 1998) at his home. He was born in Naugatuck, son of the late Anthony J. and Beatrice (Stelmokas) Mazalas and had lived in Hartford since 1910\. Red joined the CT. National Guard in 1923, he served continuously until his retirement in 1965\. He served in Word War II as a Line Chief with the Flying Tigers, in the China, Burma and India campaignsOver The Hump''. Through four generations of service, Red epitomized the guard with all that is good to his country. His unit was also called up during the Korean Conflict. Commemorating the recent Seventy-Fifth Anniversary of the 103rd, Chief Mazotas along with his brother Leo, were the honored guests at the Grand Military Ball. He was further honored by renaming Warthog Blvd. to Chief Red Mazotas Blvd. at Bradley Field. He was a longtime communicant of Holy Trinity Church and was actively involved in the Lithuanian community. He is survived by three brothers, Leo C. Mazotas, Theodore C. Mazotas and Edward C. Mazotas, all of Hartford; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Eleanor Lessie and Dorothy Mazotas; and four brothers, Joseph, Benjamin, Walter and Andrew Mazotas. The funeral will be Friday, 9:15 a.m. from The Dillon-Baxter Funeral Home, 1276 Berlin Tpke., Wethersfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church. Burial with full military honors will be in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield.
