My grandfather, Alfonso Traina, was born December 6, 1893 in Cianciana, Sicily. He had three brothers and five sisters. They were Filippa, Rose, Giusepina, Francesco, Gaetano, Giuseppe, Maria, and Paulina. He worked in the sulfur mines when he was very young (probably about 8 or 10 years old). He went into the Italian army when he was 18 years old. He was in the Calvary and stationed in Tunisia, North Africa for better part of the six years he was in the service.
He married Giusepina Marchese on April 24, 1920. They sailed for America from Palermo on January 26, 1921 aboard the ship Providincia.
They lived for a short time in Brunswick, NJ, then in Dillonvale, OH, and finally settled in Wellsville, OH.
