Old Rugged Cross

  1. On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
  2. the emblem of suffering and shame;
  3. and I love that old cross where the dearest and best
  4. for a world of lost sinners was slain.
  6. So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
  7. till my trophies at last I lay down;
  8. I will cling to the old rugged cross,
  9. and exchange it some day for a crown.
  11. O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
  12. has a wondrous attraction for me;
  13. for the dear Lamb of God left his glory above
  14. to bear it to dark Calvary.
  16. In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
  17. a wondrous beauty I see,
  18. for 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
  19. to pardon and sanctify me.
  22. To that old rugged cross I will ever be true,
  23. its shame and reproach gladly bear;
  24. then he'll call me some day to my home far away,
  25. where his glory forever I'll share.
