In 1841, Massachusetts required all towns to send birth, marriage, and death records to the state, while maintaining duplicate records at the town level. Indexes are arranged alphabetically by surname, providing an easy method for locating a particular record by listing the town where the event occurred, and the year, volume, and page for each record as it is archived at the state level. These earlier records are on microfilm at various repositories. Records after 1910 are available directly from the state.

The Family History Library has microfilm copies of the Massachusetts Vital Records Index, with additional indexes covering 1896-1900, 1901-1905, and 1906-1915. Will you also be adding these records? The library also has the actual document birth, marriage, and death certificate images from 1841-1915. Will Footnote be adding this collection?
