I have lived a full life, working until I was 62 years old and was force to retire due to a disability.

Stories about My family is my life

After I Became Disabiled, My Family has Supported Me and My Loving Wife and taken great care of me.

  • Lake City, Florida, USA

I am a 70 year old male, now living in Lake City, Florida retired since 2002.  I was born in East Point, Ga. and moved with my mother and dad and two sisters to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  I had a bother who was married and in the US Navy at the time.

I graduated from Fort Lauderdale in 1956, continuing my education at Stetson University in Deland, Florida and Union University in Jackson, Tenn.

I was married my present wife in 1959 and we had a daughter Donna in 1960, Carolyn in 1962 and Tammy in 1963.

I worked for Florida Power and Light, in Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale and Miami Florida for 15 years, retiring and working several years as an electrician in south Florida. I worked 3 years as a volunteer police officer in Lauderhill Police Department and the Broward County Sheriff's Dept. working as an undercover drug enforcement officer.  We then moved to Live Oak, Florida where I worked for the Suwanne County School System as an electrician for 2 years.  I then worked for the Live Oak Housing Authority as the maintenance supervisor or 4 years.  I was hired by the Farmer's Cooperative as the office manager and worked there for 3 years.  I then was hired again by the Suwannee County School System as their Community Education Coordinator and was voted as the Coordinator of the Year for the State of Florida.  I then was hired as the Coordinator of Progessive Employment of Columbia County Association for Retared Citizens.  We placed retared adults and trained them to work in the community in regular jobs and how to live a normal life in the community.  I worked in this position for 5 years, then worked for the North Florida Planning Council as a job placement specialist helping hard to place persons into jobs in the community.  After 1 year the Planning Council lost their funding so I took a Security Supervisor position until I retired in 2002 due to a disability.

I became disabled with familial spastic paraparisis, a neuromuscular disease, which within 5 years left me unable to walk so I am now confined to a motorized wheel chair, but as I said earlier the support and love from my wife and family my life is not bad at all.
