Just months after the Italian surrender to the Allies, and the arrest of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, on October 13, 1943, secret negotiations led to Italy allying with the Allied nations, and being subjected to German invasions until the end of WWII. Italian patisans and pro-Italian fascist troops and Nazis battled throughout the next two years, with the Nazi-occupied part of Italy creating a fascist state to combat the Allied invasion. Just weeks before the Nazi surrender in May 1945, Italy was finally liberated, spelling out the end of fascism.
