Notes from Judy Henry: "L. Simon Rieux, a native of France, and his wife, Cecile Amarble Germaine Vanier, a native of Troyes, province of Champagne, France were living in Cuba and were shown as immigrants from the Isle of Domingue in 1804 at the baptism of their daughter, Marie." It also shows that they lived in the French Quarter and that Simon had died by the time of his daughter's marriage in 1832.

"In about 1809, they moved to New Orleans as part of a flood of 9000 refugees, 2137 of whom were white, who had previously fled from Saint Domingue to Cuba due to slave uprisings. They were expelled from Cuba by the Spanish in retaliation for Napolean's invasion of Spain in 1808." From the book, New Orleans a Pictorial History by Leonard V. Huber, 1981, page 43, Legacy Press.

Unknown lady at library said there was an earlier uprising in 1791 and many people came from Haiti to New Orleans at that time. She also said St. Domingue was the original name of Haiti.

Judy Henry also writes that she has a note she made in the 1980's: "Simon Rieux, Governor of Santo Domingo, was exiled and came to New Orleans with his family."

Marriage certificate from the Archdiocese of New Orleans Archives:

"Joseph Bofill, born and a resident of this parish, son of deceased Joseph Bofill and deceased Marie Louise Beche and Antoinette Eulalie Rieux, born and a resident of this parish, minor daughter of deceased Simon Rieux and Germaine Verniet (?) was lawfully married on the 3rd day of July 1832 according to the rites of the Roman Catholic Church. Rev. Louis Moni Cure officiated in the presence of Jean Griffin, Francisco Antonio Garcia and J. Laurent Alpuente, J.A. Romer, witnesses. Marriage Book 5, Act No. 207."

Note from Fred K.: "I also found some notes that in 1811, Simon Rieux was a Chemist at 37 Toulouse St. There was another Rieux at the same address listed as a Pharmacien and Apothecary. His first name was not given."

Fred continues: "In 1832, a Simon Rieux owned a dry goods store at 51 St. Louis Street."
