Over our Heads- I was a member of Bravo Co, 588th Engineer Battalion in March 1968. Our Base camp was laid out in a rectangle with Bravo Company barracks closest to the wire. (perimeter) Then Delta Company barracks and the furtherest from the wire was Headquarters Company. On the night of March 6, 1968, there was a mortar attack by the VC who fired few rounds. Several rounds went over our heards and hit in the open areas and did no harm. Or so we thought. The helicopters lifted off in search of the VC firing positions and we came out of our bunkers. Only then did we discover that one round hit HHC and a man was killed. During all the mortar attacks in 1967-1968, I remember only one engineer, Specialist Klein, who was killed.
