I have just this year read the information and was saddened to see that Charles White was killed in action. I was OinC of PCF-10, his previous duty station.

Charles White was one of my crew members on the 10 boat, a tour of duty that went from August 1968 to July 1969. We were stationed at An Thoi, Phu Quoc Island off the west coast of Vietnam. The story that he told us when we assembled as a crew in San Diego was that he had been a BM2 but was reduced to BMSN for a small incident in Subic Bay, Philippines when he and some fellow BM’s got drunk and went over to the carrier piers and tried to chop the mooring lines of the carrier that had just arrived. This was in retaliation for the price of drinks going up in Olongapo after the carrier arrived. I can’t vouch for this put it sounds like something Chuck would do.

I was very fortunate to have Charles White as a crew member became he acted like and had the skill set of a BM2. I also had a BM1, James Taylor and an EN1, Gordon Jones in my crew which made us the most senior staffed boat in the division. Chuck manned the after .50cal/.81mm when we went to general quarters and he was especially helpful in that he was the only one in the crew who was able to go over the side and cut out the fishnet that was constantly getting wrapped up in the screws. He was also a key contributor in that he was able to locate plenty of the local beer when we went in to Ha Tien on the mainland for R&R.
