cold war shootdown
During the 50's and early 60' the relationship between US and Russia was precarious at best! there were several 'skirmish's' that led to even more 'bad feelings' My husband's father was on board a plane that was 'shot down' in 1953 in the Sea of Japan by Russian Migs! This resulted in them 'ditching' in the freezing waters , and the loss of one member of the crew. The newspaper clippings (sent to us by my mother in law) indicated that this almost caused World War III ! My father in law survived, but was forever 'scarred' by the incident,as was our relations with Russia as they insisted we were in their 'no fly zone' vehemently denied by the Navy AND my father in law.
